What are gable gift boxes?

Gable gift boxes are folding card or kraft cartons whose two top panels rise into a peak and lock together into a carry handle. They are light, quick to fold and easy to hand out in numbers. People use them for party favours, treats, small gifts and event packs.

Typical sizeInside L × W × H (mm)Often used for
Mini80 × 60 × 80Favours, sweets
Small120 × 80 × 100Cupcakes, treats
Medium180 × 100 × 120Party boxes
Large250 × 150 × 150Small hampers

What are gable gift boxes and who uses them?

A gable box has a sloping roof like a small house, with a handle cut into the peak. You carry it by the top, so it suits gifts that travel from a party, a shop counter or an event.

Party planners, bakeries, sweet shops and wedding planners order them most. Brands use them for sample packs at launches, and schools and clubs use them for prize bags.

The handle is the point of the shape. Guests leave with a box in one hand and a drink in the other, and nothing gets squashed in a coat pocket.

Gable boxes are part of our folding gift box range, made from folding card or kraft.

How does the gable top close?

Two tall panels rise from the long sides and meet at the top. Each has a handle hole cut in it, and when they come together the holes line up into one grip.

The short ends have angled roof flaps that fold in under the handle panels. A small tab locks the top, so the box stays shut when you lift it by the handle.

The bottom is either a tuck-in base, which you fold in by hand, or a crash-lock base that springs into shape as you open the flat box. We confirm which suits your contents on the quote.

What size gable box do I need?

Gable boxes are made to your contents, measured inside in millimetres. The height in the table is to the shoulder, where the roof starts. Use these sizes as a rough guide only.

SizeInside, mm (length, width, height)Typical fill
Miniabout 80 × 60 × 80Wrapped sweets, a mini candle, a lip balm
Smallabout 120 × 80 × 100Two cupcakes, a soap and a flannel, party favours
Mediumabout 180 × 100 × 120A sample kit, cookies, a mug with treats
Largeabout 250 × 150 × 150A small hamper, a party bag, a gift set

The roof adds extra room above the shoulder, which takes tissue or a twist of shred. Our guide to measuring box sizes explains inside sizes.

Should I choose white card or kraft for gable boxes?

White folding boxboard takes full colour print cleanly. Choose it for bold stripes, photographs or bright brand colours, like the green and pink sample.

Kraft board has a brown, handmade feel and needs very little print. It hides small scuffs from handling well, which helps at busy events. A one-colour logo, a stamped look or a kraft hang tag on a string is often enough, as the plain kraft sample shows.

Both are folding card, so both start from £0.25 a box and are made in 4–6 working days.

How do you print a box with a roof and four walls?

The box is printed flat on one sheet, then cut and creased. Our designers set your artwork on the flat layout so stripes run straight across each fold and the logo lands on the front.

Most buyers print the front and back with the main design and keep the ends simpler. The handle panels can carry a short message, since they are what people see first when the box is carried.

Matt or gloss lamination, foil and spot UV all work on card. Lamination also helps the handle edges resist finger marks when the box is carried around all afternoon. Read how gift box finishes compare before choosing.

Can gable boxes have windows, ribbons or tags?

Yes. These extras suit the shape well:

  • A clear window cut into the front, so the treat inside shows, like the coral sample with an oval window
  • A ribbon tied around the body and finished in a bow below the handle
  • Twine or cord knotted through the handle hole
  • A hang tag on a string looped over the handle, printed with a name or a thank-you line
  • A round printed label on the front, which lets one box design carry many messages

Labels are useful for events. One printed box covers every guest, and a label or tag carries each name. A window and a ribbon together can crowd the front, so pick one main feature per side.

Which occasions suit a gable box?

Children's birthday parties use them as party bags with a handle. Weddings use the mini size for favours at each place setting. Baby showers, christenings and Easter egg hunts suit the small size.

For business use, gable boxes work as launch packs, open day goody bags and trade stand giveaways. Matching designs across sizes work well too, so see our birthday gift boxes for parties for a lidded option.

How do gable boxes arrive and fold up?

They arrive flat, glued along one side seam, packed in cartons. Folding one takes under a minute:

  1. Open the flat box into a tube.
  2. Push the crash-lock base down until it clicks flat, or fold in the four tuck flaps.
  3. Fill the box, leaving room under the roof.
  4. Fold the short roof flaps inwards.
  5. Bring the two handle panels up together and lock the top tab.

Free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days. Flat boxes are light and stack neatly, so a large party order fits in a cupboard. Fold them a day or two before the event rather than weeks ahead, so the creases stay crisp and the stacks take less room.

What mistakes should I avoid with gable boxes?

  • Measuring the full height to the handle instead of the shoulder height
  • Overfilling, so the handle panels cannot meet and lock
  • Putting a logo on the roof flaps, which fold away under the handle
  • Loading heavy jars in a large box with a tuck-in base instead of a crash-lock base
  • Forgetting space for a hang tag or ribbon when planning where the logo goes

Misprints or damage reported within 10 days with photos are reprinted or refunded under our policy.

Gable Gift box questions

Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp or call +44 7578 382054.

Why is it called a gable box?

The top rises into a peak like the gable end of a house roof. The handle is cut into that peak, so the box is carried from the top.

Will the handle of a gable box take the weight of the contents?

It suits light gifts like sweets, treats, candles and small toiletries. For heavier contents, ask for a crash-lock base and tell us the weight so we can advise.

Do gable boxes come flat?

Yes. They arrive flat, glued along one seam, and fold into shape in under a minute without tape or glue.

What is a crash-lock base on a gable box?

It is a base that is pre-glued so it springs flat into place when you open the box. It is quicker to fold up when you have a large batch to fill.

Can I have a window in a gable gift box?

Yes. A window can be cut into the front or side so the contents show. Tell us the shape, such as an oval, a circle or a rectangle.

Can kraft gable boxes be printed in colour?

Yes, but dark colours show best on brown kraft. Pale shades and white fade into the board, so keep light colours for white card.

How do I add names to gable favour boxes for a wedding?

Print one design on all the boxes, then add a name on a hang tag, sticker or label. That keeps one print run for every guest.

Can I tie a ribbon through the handle of a gable box?

Yes. Ribbon, twine or cord can be knotted through the handle hole or tied around the body below it.

What is the smallest gable box you make?

A common small starting size is about 80 × 60 × 80 mm inside, which holds a few sweets or a lip balm. We can go smaller to suit your item.

How long do printed gable boxes take?

Production is 4–6 working days after you approve your proof. Your order then travels free, tracked, to UK mainland addresses within 2–3 working days.

Are gable boxes printed on the inside?

They can be. Inside print shows when the handle panels open, so a pattern or a thank-you line works well there.

Can I preview my party design on a gable box?

Yes. Use Design Your Gift Box to place your artwork, then our designers send you a free proof.
