What are flower gift boxes?

Flower gift boxes are rigid round or heart-shaped boxes that florists fill with a lined block of foam and tightly packed stems. The flowers sit level with or just above the rim, and a fitted lid goes on for the journey. Ribbon bands, bows and handles finish them.

Typical sizeInside L × W × H (mm)Often used for
Small round150 × 150 × 120A few stems
Medium round200 × 200 × 160Hand-tied posy
Heart250 × 230 × 100Roses, chocolates
Large round260 × 260 × 200Full bouquet

Who uses flower gift boxes?

Florists, flower delivery shops and gift shops that sell preserved or soap roses. Event planners order them for table pieces, and hamper makers use the heart shape for anniversary sets.

A flower box replaces a bouquet. The stems are cut short and pushed into foam, so the arrangement keeps its shape on a table without a vase.

Shops selling online like them for a practical reason. A boxed arrangement is easier to photograph, price and describe than a hand-tied bunch, because every order looks the same.

Flower boxes sit in our gift boxes chosen by occasion, next to hamper and jewellery boxes.

Round or heart: what do the shapes look like?

Two of our photos show round hat boxes in black. One has a printed ribbon band around the top edge and a loose ribbon tail. The other has a gold scroll pattern and a ribbon handle passing through the side.

The other two are hearts. A red heart with a bow on the lid holds soap roses around a small soft toy. A burgundy heart has a black satin bow on the lid and is packed with fresh red roses.

Round boxes stand taller and suit domed arrangements. Hearts are shallower and are filled flat to the rim.

What size flower box do I need?

Size the box to the number of stems and how high they should sit. Measure across the arrangement at its widest point, then decide how much of the stem shows above the rim.

Typical sizeInside L × W × H (mm)Roughly holds
Small roundabout 150 × 150 × 120A tight dome of 9 to 12 roses
Medium roundabout 200 × 200 × 160Around 20 roses or a mixed arrangement
Heartabout 250 × 230 × 100Roses packed flat, or soap roses with a small gift
Large roundabout 260 × 260 × 200A tall mixed arrangement with foliage

Stem counts depend on head size. Send us your usual recipe and we will check the fit before the proof.

Can a flower box hold water?

No, and it should not try to. The box is greyboard wrapped in paper. Florists line the base with a liner before adding wet foam, so water never touches the board.

Ask us to size the box with your liner in mind. A liner adds a few millimetres to each wall, and a tight fit stops the foam block from shifting when the box is carried.

Preserved roses and soap roses need no water. They sit in a dry foam block or a card insert with round cut-outs, as in our red heart sample.

Why rigid board for a flower box?

A box full of foam and stems is heavy for its size. A rigid wall stays round when lifted by its ribbon handle, and the lid seats properly every time.

Customers also keep them. An empty hat box ends up holding scarves or photos on a shelf, so your shop name stays in the house long after the roses have gone.

Rigid styles are quoted higher than our folding card start of £0.25 a box. Your quote gives the exact figure for shape, size and finish.

How can a flower box be printed and finished?

Black, red and burgundy are the usual colours, because they make red and pink flowers look brighter. Cream and blush suit pastel arrangements.

Gold foil works well for a scroll or a shop name around the wall, as on the black round sample. Soft-touch lamination on dark paper feels smooth and hides handling marks.

A printed ribbon band is a cheap way to change the message without reprinting the box. See our guide to gift box finishes for how foil and soft-touch compare.

Ribbons, handles and extras

  • Ribbon handle threaded through two holes in the wall so the box carries like a bag
  • Printed ribbon band glued around the rim with your shop name
  • Satin bow fixed to the lid, or a ribbon tied around lid and base
  • Clear lid so the flowers show while the box is closed
  • Card insert with round holes for soap or preserved roses
  • Small card holder on the lid for the message

Handles are fitted before delivery. Bows can be fitted or sent loose so you tie them after filling.

Which days bring the most flower box orders?

Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the two biggest weeks for florists. Order the boxes well ahead, as rigid production takes 8–10 working days after proof.

Anniversaries, birthdays, weddings and sympathy flowers keep demand steady through the year. A plain black round box works for all of them with a change of ribbon.

If you expect a rush, order plain boxes and change the look with ribbon. A new printed band takes minutes to fit when the season moves on.

How do flower boxes travel?

Most florists deliver them by hand, upright, with the lid off or loosely on. A box packed high above the rim cannot take a lid, so plan the arrangement height around the delivery.

For van deliveries, a shallow tray with a cut-out for the base stops round boxes rolling when the van turns. Hearts sit flatter and travel more steadily.

If you post preserved flowers, put the lidded box inside a snug outer carton marked this way up. Empty boxes reach your shop by free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2–3 working days.

Flower box mistakes to avoid

Ordering without the liner. A box sized only to the foam block will not take the liner, and wet foam will stain the wrap.

Choosing a lid that is too shallow for a domed arrangement. Either order a deeper lid or deliver without it.

Printing fine text on a curved wall. Small type distorts at the join, so keep wording short and centred on the front.

Flower Gift box questions

Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp or call +44 7578 382054.

Do flower boxes come with floral foam?

No. We make the box. Florists fit their own foam and liner so they can choose the right type for each arrangement.

Can I get flower boxes with a ribbon handle?

Yes. The ribbon threads through two holes in the wall. You pick the ribbon colour.

How many roses fit in a heart flower box?

The heart size holds roughly 15 to 20 medium roses packed flat. Larger heads mean fewer stems.

Can a flower box have a clear lid?

Yes. A clear lid lets the flowers show while the box stays closed, which suits preserved roses.

Is there a smaller round box for a single rose?

Yes. We can scale the round box down to suit one stem or a few preserved heads.

Can the shop name go on the ribbon instead of the box?

Yes. A printed ribbon band carries your name, and the box stays plain so it suits any occasion.

Can you make a square flower box?

Square boxes are possible as a lid and base style. Send the size and we will quote it.

Do flower boxes have a removable lid?

Yes. Round and heart boxes both have a deep push-on lid that lifts straight off.

Will the board go soft if it gets damp?

Greyboard is not made to get wet. Use a liner under any wet foam and keep the box off wet surfaces.

Can I have flower boxes in two sizes with the same print?

Yes. We fit the artwork to each size and show both on the proof.

Can I fit a soft toy beside the flowers?

Yes. A card insert can hold soap roses around a space for a small toy or gift.

Which flower box colour is most popular?

Black is the most requested, then red and blush. Dark boxes make red roses look deeper.
