What are clothing gift boxes?
Clothing gift boxes are flat, wide boxes made to hold a folded garment without crushing it. They come as rigid boxes with a magnetic flap or a separate lid, or as folding card boxes that arrive flat. Most are lined with tissue and finished with a ribbon or a printed card.
| Typical size | Inside L × W × H (mm) | Often used for |
|---|---|---|
| Accessory | 200 × 150 × 50 | Ties, scarves, socks |
| Shirt | 330 × 250 × 70 | Folded shirt |
| Knitwear | 350 × 280 × 100 | Jumpers, hoodies |
| Outfit | 420 × 320 × 120 | Two or three pieces |
Who buys clothing gift boxes?
Fashion labels use them to send a shirt, jumper or scarf to a customer folded the way it left the studio. Boutiques keep a stack behind the till for gift wrapping. HR teams order them for branded knitwear in a new starter pack.
The shape is the point. A clothing box is wide and shallow, so the garment lies flat in one layer instead of being rolled or stuffed. It comes out with the folds you put in, not a crumpled collar.
If you are sending clothes for a particular moment, see our gift boxes sorted by occasion for other shapes that sit alongside this one.
How does a clothing box open and close?
There are three ways to build it, and each changes how the box feels in the hand.
- Magnetic flap: the lid is hinged along the back and two hidden magnets catch the front edge. It lifts like a book cover and stays shut in a bag.
- Rigid lid and base: a separate lid slides down over a deep tray. Our sample in navy has a ribbon bow and a small swing tag on the lid.
- Folding card lid and tray: two printed card pieces that arrive flat and fold up at your packing bench. Lighter, quicker to store and cheaper per box.
Magnetic flaps suit brands that want the customer to keep the box. Lid and base is the classic shirt box. Folding card suits shops that wrap at speed.
What size box fits a folded shirt?
Fold the garment the way you will pack it, then measure it lying flat. Add about 10 mm each way for tissue and a little air. The four sizes below are common starting points, not stock sizes.
| Typical size | Inside L × W × H (mm) | What usually fits |
|---|---|---|
| Accessory | about 200 × 150 × 50 | Silk scarf, tie, socks, a pair of gloves |
| Shirt | about 330 × 250 × 70 | One folded dress shirt or blouse with tissue |
| Knitwear | about 350 × 280 × 100 | A folded jumper, cardigan or sweatshirt |
| Outfit | about 420 × 320 × 120 | Two pieces, a throw, or loungewear sets |
Chunky knits need more height than you expect. Our guide on measuring a gift box inside size walks through it with a ruler.
Rigid or folding card for clothes?
Rigid boxes use greyboard wrapped in printed or coloured paper. The walls do not flex, the corners stay square and customers often reuse them for storage. They take 8–10 working days after proof approval.
Folding card boxes use boxboard or kraft board. They arrive flat, take up a fraction of the shelf space and are made in 4–6 working days. Our price starts from £0.25 a box for folding card; rigid styles are quoted higher on your quote.
A corrugated outer is worth it for bulky knitwear sent in larger quantities. We will suggest it on the quote if the brief needs it.
Which print finishes suit fashion packaging?
Most clothing brands keep the outside quiet and put the detail inside. A matt black box with a foil logo on the lid is a common pairing, as in our photo with the cream note card on top.
Soft-touch lamination gives a dry, velvety feel that suits knitwear. Gloss shows fingerprints on dark colours, so it works better on pale boxes. Spot UV can pick out a logo or pattern on a matt lid.
Printing inside the lid is cheap to add and is the first thing the customer sees. Read how matt, gloss and soft-touch differ before you choose.
Tissue, ribbon and cards
The garment is soft, so the box rarely needs a cut insert. What it does need is a way to hold the folds and present the piece.
- Printed tissue wrapped over the garment and closed with a sticker or a card
- A ribbon tied around a lid and base box, or a ribbon pull under the magnetic flap
- A card shelf or slot inside the lid for a thank-you note or care instructions
- A belly band around the box with the size, colour or product name printed on it
- Rope or card handles so the box doubles as a carrier bag in a shop
What occasions suit a clothing box?
Birthdays and anniversaries are the obvious ones. Shirts and ties for weddings, matching for groomsmen, are a big part of the work. Father's Day pushes up orders for shirts, ties and socks.
Corporate buyers use them for branded hoodies at events, staff milestones and client thank-yous. Baby clothing shops use the accessory size for a first outfit.
Shops that sell gift cards alongside clothes sometimes order a matching accessory box, so a voucher and a scarf can be given together. Keeping one print design across both sizes makes a small range look planned.
Can a clothing box be posted as it is?
A rigid clothing box should go inside a plain outer carton or a mailer. The printed wrap scuffs easily in sorting machines, and corners take knocks.
Folding card boxes are lighter, but they still need an outer for the post. Kraft board handles rough handling with less visible wear than a printed white board.
Your boxes reach you with free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2–3 working days. If any arrive damaged or misprinted, send photos within 10 days and we reprint or refund.
Mistakes to avoid with garment boxes
Most problems come from sizing to the product label rather than to the folded piece. A medium jumper and a large one fold to different heights.
Another is choosing a very dark box with gloss. It shows every thumbprint after a day on a shop counter. Matt or soft-touch hides handling much better.
Leave room for the tissue. Three sheets folded over a shirt can add 5 mm or more, and a box that is too tight crushes the collar.
Finally, think about how many sizes you really need. Two well chosen sizes often cover a whole collection, and fewer sizes means simpler stock at your packing bench.

Clothing Gift box questions
Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp or call +44 7578 382054.
Will a folded jumper fit in a shirt-size box?
A thin cotton jumper often will. Chunky knits usually need the knitwear size, which has about 30 mm more height.
Can the box hold two garments?
Yes. Measure both pieces stacked with tissue between them, and we size the box to that height.
Do clothing boxes come with tissue paper?
Tissue is an optional extra. We can print it with your logo or supply it plain in a colour that matches the box.
Is a magnetic clothing box worth the extra cost over lid and base?
It depends on whether you want customers to keep it. The magnetic flap opens like a book and reuses well; lid and base is simpler and usually cheaper.
Can I have a ribbon tied around the lid?
Yes. We can fit the ribbon before delivery or send it loose so you can tie it after packing.
Do you make boxes for ties and scarves?
Yes. The accessory size suits a tie, scarf or pair of gloves. A long narrow box works for a single tie laid out straight.
Can the box have a window to show the fabric?
A clear window can be cut into a folding card lid. It works well when the colour or pattern is the selling point.
How long do rigid clothing boxes take?
Rigid ones take 8–10 working days after you approve the proof. Folding card versions take 4–6.
Can I order clothing boxes in kraft?
Yes. Kraft board suits folding card clothing boxes and takes one or two print colours well.
Can the box double as a shop carrier?
Add rope or card handles to a lid and base box and it can leave the shop without a separate bag.
Do clothing boxes need an outer box for posting?
We recommend one. The printed surface is made for display, not for sorting machines.
Can I print care instructions inside?
Yes. Print them inside the lid or on a loose card that sits on top of the tissue.
